Support Request: Kiosk Inactivity resetting time

Description

Hi
We're facing an issue with the Kiosks that are running on Windows 11, compared with eg. Windows 10 and especially Windows 7. On Windows 7 it takes around 2 seconds when the Kiosk is reset but on Windows 11 it takes more than 20 seconds. We've removed the "Execute Logon" which gained us 5-7 seconds but still the difference is huge. Many of our customers (hotels) want us do to the reset often (every 60 minuts) as there are risks that the next user will be able to see information on the last page. Can the time be reduced?

Hello,

You are probably still using the IE skin (no longer supported) on the Windows 7 system (also no longer supported).
Otherwise, the SiteKiosk Classic browser is restarted for technical reasons when logging out / activating the screensaver with Chrome Browser Skin and how quickly this works depends on the system, not on SiteKiosk. There is no further setting for this.

Alternatively, you may want to take a look at our current product SiteKiosk Online.
https://www.sitekiosk.com/eu/sitekiosk/

SiteKiosk Online is designed from scratch and, except for the start mode of the client software, everything is configured on the SiteKiosk Online server (in the projects you can publish on the client computers). With SiteKiosk Online you can create interactive content as well as display scheduled and event-driven content. The licensing of the client is also handled by the server and you no longer need to store any licensing information on the client.

We also offer upgrade licenses from SiteKiosk Classic to SiteKiosk Online (SiteKiosk Online Cloud - Upgrade):
https://sitekiosk.com/eu/web/Shop/Shop.aspx?GroupIdx=1

You can test everything before you purchase any license.
Simply create a so-called team at https://sitekiosk.online

After creating and logging in to your team, you can create a new project under >Projects (e.g. with Browser Template), which can then be published to the SiteKiosk Online Client(s), that you have registered to the team.

The client software can be downloaded under >Dashboard>Downloads (there is client software for Windows and for Android).
System requirements: https://sitekiosk.online/help/en/SystemRequirements.html

After installing the SiteKiosk Online Client & registering it with your team (there is also a client for Windows that automatically registers the client with your team), you can log in to your team at sitekiosk.online and publish the project.
Here is some more information about the client: https://sitekiosk.online/help/en/SiteKioskClient.html

There is also an online documentation available:
https://sitekiosk.online/help/en/Welcome.html

And here a PDF with more information about SiteKiosk Online:

Here you also find some tutorial videos about SiteKiosk Online:
https://www.sitekiosk.com/eu/tutorials/

Please note:
SiteRemote, SiteCaster and SiteKiosk Classic are legacy products.
SiteRemote and SiteCaster will only receive service updates (security updates and bug fixes) for until the end of 2025.
SiteRemote.net will cease operations on the 31st of December 2025 as is communicated on the login page of https://www.siteremote.net.
If you have your own SiteRemote server you can still use it after the 31st of December 2025 for as long as you like. This product will receive no support after that date, though.

SiteKiosk Classic as a standalone software will still be available. There is currently no planned end date for it.
But as a legacy product it receives limited support, meaning only severe bugs will be fixed and the Chromium browser engine will be updated about 1 or 2 times a year.

Hi

You're telling us that software we bought recently is to be expected to be 10 times slower running on the same HW?

And the only solution is to change our +50 kiosks around Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Ireland to another SiteKiosk product?

I don't know how you think this sound yourself. But to me, it really now makes us start looking for other Kiosk software - even using the built-in functionality in Edge/Chrome. Even if this do not give us 100% functionality compared with SiteKiosk, the cost of changing existing kiosks and our current SW setup, will effectively block your suggestion.

We been a satisfied user of SiteKiosk until now. With this feedback it's not the case any longer.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear this, but I can only give you the technical facts.

The restart on logout / screensaver activation is technically necessary for the deletion of the cookies and temporary Internet files if you are using the Chrome browser skin in SiteKiosk Classic Windows (this was the case from the beginning). How fast this browser restart happens depends on the performance of the underlying system.
There is no special setting for this in SiteKiosk and the stability and performance of SiteKiosk (regardless of the SiteKiosk version) depends heavily on the Windows system and its hardware (including drivers), as well as on other Windows services / background programs that have been started.

Under Windows 7 you may have been using the IE skin under >Start page & Browser and you can of course continue to use it, which will speed up the logout process. However, this will also mean that most websites will no longer work (as most of the pages in the web are not compatible with the IE anymore). Otherwise, the performance of Windows 10 or 11 on the same hardware is probably no better than with Windows 7.

I have therefore referred you to our current product SiteKiosk Online, as it works more quickly here and a restart is no longer necessary for the logout.

P.S. Just to avoid misunderstandings: On a normal current hardware system that supports Windows 10/11, SiteKiosk Classic Windows with Chrome browser skin only needs 2-3 seconds to restart when logging out (and in my slower VM with 2 cores and 4GB Ram about 5 seconds)

The issue has arosen since windows 7 is not a safe OS anymore, so we are in the process of updating (and using windows 11) on new Kiosks as the requirements from our customers demands it. So using win7 and IE is not an option.

Furthermore as I wrote. I have deselected the Sign-out part of the reset, but that only gave us 5-7 secs. So it can't be the sign-out procedure, that accounts for the increased delay.

Now the KIOSK we've been using and still rely on is equipped with some very basic CPU and RAM ressources (Celeron N4500 and 2GB ram) but it has until recently been sufficient, as the Kiosks only runs a web-based applikation. They are actually delivered with Win11 when we get them (ASUS E1600WKA).

I'll pursue other ways of dealing with this shortcoming as the current situation is unacceptable for our customers.

Hello,

Windows 7 and IE are indeed not an option, as this would be a very insecure system (and is no longer supported by Microsoft or by us).

Even if the Celeron N4500 is not that powerful as a mobile processor, more RAM would probably help, as 2GB of RAM is very limited with Windows 11.
4GB is also the minimum requirement for Windows 11:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11-system-requirements-86c11283-ea52-4782-9efd-7674389a7ba3
An SSD (if not already in use) can also speed up the system considerably.
