Support Request: Sitekiosk Chrome skin PDF problem

Description

We have major problems displaying large PDF-files with the built-in Chrome skin. Files of 100 MB (100 pages) causes a SiteKiosk reset. 50 MB (50 pages) seems to work. We used to have 9.7 at our archive reading room - in this version these large files displayed nicely. In out 9.9 version the Chromium engine was updated to v 118.

Hello,

Unfortunately, it is a known problem in SiteKiosk Classic Windows that PDF files linked in web pages that are larger than 100MB cannot be opened (in the File Manager, after downloading the PDF it works).

In addition to reducing the file size below 100MB, there are the following workarounds:
1. delivering the PDF as a download so that it opens afterwards (must be done in the website code).

2. deactivating the PDF plugin of SiteKiosk Classic and using an external application
Proceed like this for disabling the PDF plugin in SiteKiosk
- Open the file "manifest.json" under "C:\Program Files (x86)\SiteKiosk\SiteKioskNG\assets\pdfjs\oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm\" with an editor (e.g. Notepad++) delete the following 2 lines there:

"mime_types": ["application/pdf"],
"mime_types_handler": index.html,

After the changes you can configure the download behavior in the SiteKiosk configuration.
For example, you download the PDF and open it e.g. in Adobe Reader.
To do this you can just allow downloads and set Adobe Reader as the application to open the downloaded PDF (Start Page & Browser>Customize>Downloads).

Also activate the option "Delete downloaded files" under >Logout.
And under >Applications, add Adobe Reader as an external application so that it will be closed when SiteKiosk logs out, screensaver.

Otherwise, please consider switching to our current product SiteKiosk Online, which does not have this problem.
https://www.sitekiosk.com/eu/sitekiosk/

SiteKiosk Online is designed from scratch and, except for the start mode of the client software, everything is configured on the SiteKiosk Online server (in the projects you can publish on the client computers).
With SiteKiosk Online you can create interactive content as well as display scheduled and event-driven content.
The licensing of the client is also handled by the server and you no longer need to store any licensing information on the client.

We also offer upgrade licenses from SiteKiosk Classic to SiteKiosk Online (SiteKiosk Online Cloud - Upgrade):
https://sitekiosk.com/eu/web/Shop/Shop.aspx?GroupIdx=1

You can test everything before you purchase any license.
Simply create a so-called team at https://sitekiosk.online

After creating and logging in to your team, you can create a new project under >Projects (e.g. with Browser Template), which can then be published to the SiteKiosk Online Client(s), that you have registered to the team.

The client software can be downloaded under >Dashboard>Downloads (there is client software for Windows and for Android).
System requirements: https://sitekiosk.online/help/en/SystemRequirements.html

After installing the SiteKiosk Online Client & registering it with your team (there is also a client for Windows that automatically registers the client with your team), you can log in to your team at sitekiosk.online and publish the project.
Here is some more information about the client: https://sitekiosk.online/help/en/SiteKioskClient.html

There is also an online documentation available:

Please note:
SiteRemote, SiteCaster and SiteKiosk Classic are legacy products.
SiteRemote and SiteCaster will only receive service updates (security updates and bug fixes) for until the end of 2025.
SiteRemote.net will cease operations on the 31st of December 2025 as is communicated on the login page of https://www.siteremote.net.
If you have your own SiteRemote server you can still use it after the 31st of December 2025 for as long as you like. This product will receive no support after that date, though.

SiteKiosk Classic as a standalone software will still be available. There is currently no planned end date for it.
But as a legacy product it receives limited support, meaning only severe bugs will be fixed and the Chromium browser engine will be updated about 1 or 2 times a year.
